Burt’s Bees lip balm used to be an amazing beeswax product. However, after being purchased by Clorox, the company eventually started adding seed oil to the ingredients. You may have heard that research strongly suggests that seed oils cause cancer. Despite this, I loved the product concept, so I started making my own Burts Bees copycat lip-balm recipe.
This homemade lip balm recipe is so easy to make, using beeswax and a few other ingredients.
Beeswax is all natural, as opposed to paraffin wax which is a non-renewable byproduct of petroleum, coal, or oil shale. Some lip balm products may also use soy wax, which is a processed form of soybean oil. In addition, soy wax products usually have some paraffin wax as well.
Beeswax is hypo-allergenic. When used in candles, beeswax produces a clean, bright flame, whereas paraffin wax candles contain toxic chemicals like benzene and toluene, and may produce soot and harmful emissions.
So I like to steer clear of soy and paraffin wax products if possible.
Here’s my Burts Bees Copycat Lip Balm Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp shea butter
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 2 tbsp beeswax
- 1 tsp jojoba/almond/vitamin e oil (optional but great for really dry or chapped lips)
- 15 drop of essential oils (Peppermint, lavender, and sweet orange are my favorites)
- Old or new lip balm tubes or lip balm tins
Instructions
- Combine all lip balm ingredients, except the essential oil, in a double boiler on the stove. You can make your own by placing a small pot in a larger pot filled with water.
- Melt all the ingredients until well combined, stirring frequently so the mixture doesn’t burn.
- Remove from heat and let stand for about a minute and then add in your essential oils. Mix well.
- Transfer mixture to tins or lip balm tubes and let cool completely. This may take a few hours.
- Your lip balm is ready to use when mixture is completely cooled!
When I make lip balm for myself, I like to recycle tins from other products. But when I make the Copycat Lip-Balm Recipe for gifts, I like to buy cute little containers on amazon.
